Best Surf Schools in Matosinhos: How to Choose
Matosinhos beach has more than a dozen surf schools within a few hundred metres of sand. That’s great news for visitors — competition keeps quality high and prices fair — but it also makes choosing one surprisingly hard. Here’s what actually matters.
What separates a good school
Group size. Look for a maximum of 6–8 students per instructor. Bigger groups mean fewer waves for you.
Certified instructors. Good schools use federation-certified instructors — and say so upfront.
Included gear. Board, wetsuit, and insurance should all be in the advertised price — around €25–35 for a two-hour group lesson, or €50–70 for a private one.
Morning slots. Schools that push you to morning sessions care about your waves — conditions in Matosinhos are almost always better before the afternoon wind.
Questions to ask before booking
- How many students per instructor?
- Is the lesson moved or refunded if the sea is flat or stormy?
- Do you help with photos or video? (Most schools don’t — see below.)
