Your First Surf Lesson in Porto: What to Expect
Booked a surf lesson in Porto and slightly nervous? Don’t be. Here’s exactly how the next two hours of your life will go.
Minute 0–20: Wetsuit and warm-up
You’ll meet your instructor at the school on Matosinhos beach, squeeze into a wetsuit (harder than surfing, honestly), grab a soft-top board, and jog through a warm-up on the sand.
Minute 20–40: The pop-up
On the beach, you’ll learn the one move that matters: paddle, push, feet under you, stand. You’ll repeat it until it’s boring. That’s the point — muscle memory is what gets you up when a real wave is pushing you.
Minute 40–110: In the water
The instructor walks you into waist-deep whitewater, turns your board toward the beach, and calls your wave. First try, you’ll probably eat foam. Second or third try, something clicks — the board steadies, you’re standing, and the beach is sliding toward you. It is genuinely one of the best feelings available to a human on holiday.
Minute 110–120: The walk back
Salt in your hair, arms like noodles, grinning like an idiot. Everyone does.
What nobody tells you
You’ll want to describe that first wave to people for years. The problem: nobody films it properly. Your friend’s phone footage shows a dot in grey water. This is the gap we exist for — a drone follows your session and you get a cinematic, music-scored vertical film of YOU riding your first wave, delivered within 24 hours, sized for Instagram and TikTok. Check prices here — and if you’re on the fence, look at the example videos first.
Practical tips
Go in the morning for cleaner waves, skip the big lunch beforehand, and leave your jewellery at the hotel. Everything else, Matosinhos will take care of.
